Politics and Football - not the same...
(posted originally on Bubblews)
I don't know about other countries, but in my country there are two topics taboo, that people believe friends and acquaintances should never discuss (unless they already know they agree): Politics and football. And when you put politics at the same level as football people tend to defend a party as they defend the club they started liking when they were a child, no matter how bad it is.
Well, Portugal have a lot of faults and one of them, I think the main one, is the lack of political knowledge and interest by the people who vote. It doesn't help when you say people shouldn't discuss politics no matter what. I think it is still a "twitch" from our dictatorial times (that ended only in 1974). So people just don't talk and bash whoever tries to do it. And if they don't discuss the matter they don't learn about and if they don't learn they don't know how to vote...
"One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors." - Plato
