Should children have homework?

Sometimes I hear the argument that children shouldn't have any homework... the reasons are several: from saying that children should learn in school and not at home, to implying that it promotes inequality because some children have smarter and richer parents than others, or that children have to have time to play, among others.

Well the teachers that are teaching our children HAD homework. They also came from different social status and had different parents (some smarter than others, some with more time, some richer...) and that didn't stop them to get where they are today.

"Children should have time to play" - and don't they have it? Even in school they have time to play, there is a PLAYING TIME, and that's the main place where they actually play! When they get home, if they have no homework what will most children do? Most of them will be in front of a computer or game console playing video games... do you think that is healthy?

"They should learn at school" - And where do they learn how to study? that's what homework is for, to give them the habit of studying what they LEARNED at school. If they never learn to study, if a teacher doesn't give them a homework, equal to every student (whether he is a farmers son or a doctors son) how will the farmer know how to guide is son in his studies!?
I believe, contrary to what many people say, that homework promotes equality, without homework the "doctor son" will be in much greater advantage.
