Why are soap operas so popular?

I mean, I used to watch them when i was younger, living in my mothers house, she watches them so I "had" to, and some of them I really enjoyed.

In my country the most popular soap operas, for a long time, were the Brazilian ones. I still smile thinking about some of them, but the ones I enjoyed were all inspired in literary work, so they had a bit of historical and cultural interest.

What I will never understand is why people enjoy the same story over and over again, with different characters, but the story is always the same... Soap operas lack so much substance...

Ok... worse than that are reality shows like big brother and subsequent versions of it... but I'm not even going into that now...
