Smoking and drinking during pregnancy

Do you think pregnant women should be forbidden to smoke and/or drink?

We all know the risks of smoking, for us and for others. But one of the others may be the baby strapped on our belly, no where to go, no word to say. Does that baby have any rights?

I know that in many countries, mine included, a woman may decide to end a life that is forming inside her because she took control of her body (even when another body is depending on hers). But how about when a woman decides she WANTS to have a baby? Should that woman still have the right to do has she pleases and keep on smoking and/or drinking as much as she likes, or is she committing a crime?

How about after birth? If a child is born with severe brain damage due to the fact that her mother was a hard smoker and/or drinker during pregnancy, should that woman be considered guilty of a crime?

Reflecting on abortion

I already wrote here, more than once, that I am against abortion, BUT I am not against mothers who abort. It may sound contradictory but I don’t think it is.

Abortion is horrific and, excluding rape cases, threats to the life of the mother and/or the baby, babies with high deficiencies, I can’t understand when a mother chooses to end her healthy baby life.

But I don’t have to understand. I also think I shouldn’t have to pay for it (but that’s another question that I’m not addressing now).

I was listening to a debate on the radio about the subject and about how protesters should be banned from the doors of abortion clinics where they harass women who are going to abort. I don’t think they should be banned, but maybe police should be present and avoiding “bad words”.

Anyway I heard the story of a crying woman who aborted and still is hurt by the situation she had to go through. Her partner didn’t want the baby, abandoned her, she was living in a small house, has health problems and not much money. She says she thought about the baby when she ended his life. She cries...
I don’t agree with abortion. I probably in her case wouldn’t have aborted but I am also not her.

Of course there are many cases of abuse. People who abort several times and I think a better legislation on the subject is needed. And I can never accept that the tax payers pay for abortions by healthy women of healthy babies.

Home Birth: yes or no?

Would you have a home birth? Do you believe it is safe? Would you risk your child life (and your own)?

When I think about home birth, if I only think about myself I have to agree with it. It must be much more comfortable, much less stressful, and much more respectful for the mothers time, ideas, pain. You are at your own home, with a trained midwife. Chances are everything will go well and you will have a great labour experience...

BUT what if there is a complication? One no one saw before? One that just happened in that moment and the baby needs to go to the emergency room to be saved? The time spent taking him to the nearest hospital is fatal, and the baby dies... Would you forgive yourself? Do you risk it?

When considering the mother's comfort and the baby's safety, I'll always choose the baby's safety... ALWAYS. If that means that I have to endure a stressful and painful experience, with a lot of medical intervention that I consider unnecessary and excessive, I will. My child safety, comfort and life will always be my priority.
